Description
Sound familiar?
- Ten tabs of adverts open and they’re all starting to blur.
- The cheapest bike to buy isn’t always the cheapest to own.
- You forgot to check the chain – and the paperwork.
What the Motorcycle Buying Comparison does
Type in each bike’s price, economy, insurance, tax, servicing, tyres and expected resale value. It works out fuel and running costs for the distance you ride, the value you’ll lose, the total cost of owning and cost per mile or km – then ranks your shortlist by cost and by your own weighted score.
What’s inside
- Shortlist Dashboard – cheapest to own, best score, issues found, ranks and charts
- Compare – up to 8 bikes with true cost of owning and cost per mile/km
- Scores – 14 criteria with your own weights, rated 1–10 after a test ride
- Viewing Checklist – 35 checks including paperwork checks for your country
- Questions for the Seller – 15 questions with space for each answer
Made for your country
Pick UK, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand on the Dashboard and the sheet switches to match: spellings (Tyres / Tires, Colour / Color), the £ or $ in headings and the paperwork checks (V5C and HPI in the UK; title and history report in the USA; lien search in Canada; PPSR in Australia; money-owing checks in New Zealand). Switch any time – your totals stay the same.
Format
- Your blank spreadsheet (.xlsx, international edition for the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand), ready for your shortlist
- A filled-in DEMO copy comparing an MT-07, a Tracer 7 and a CB650R, so you can see every tab working before you start
- A PDF user guide: set-up, every tab explained, tips and answers to common questions
- Works in Microsoft Excel 2019 or newer, Microsoft 365, Excel for the web and Google Sheets
- No macros, nothing to install, no subscription
- White cells are for you to fill in; grey cells work themselves out. Anything typed as text by mistake turns pink so nothing is silently missed
How it works
- Buy and download the files straight away.
- Open the spreadsheet in Excel, or upload it to Google Sheets.
- Look through the DEMO and the PDF guide, pick your country on the Dashboard, then type in the first bike on your shortlist.

Motorcycle Buying Comparison FAQ
How is the cost of owning worked out?
Running costs (fuel for your distance, insurance, tax / registration, servicing, tyres, other) × the years you’ll keep it, plus value lost (price − value when you sell). It’s an estimate from your own numbers – a fair way to compare, not a quote.
Does it work for cars?
It’s built for bikes, but the Compare and Scores tabs work for any vehicle.
Are the paperwork checks legal advice?
No – they’re general reminders of what to check.
Do I need Microsoft Excel?
No. It works in Excel 2019 or newer, Microsoft 365, the free Excel for the web, and Google Sheets.
Is it a subscription?
No – you pay once and the file is yours to keep.
I’m not good with spreadsheets. Is this for me?
Yes. You only type in the white cells – everything else works itself out – and the DEMO and PDF guide show you exactly what to do.
Does it work on a Mac, iPad or phone?
Yes on a Mac (Excel or Google Sheets). On an iPad or phone it works in the Google Sheets or Excel app, though a bigger screen is easier for setting up.
How do I get my file?
Straight after checkout you’ll see download links, and they’re emailed to you too.
